Our residents share some of their experiences with our program as well as what they like about Edmonton, their highlights of the program, and one piece of advice for applicants about the interview process. Here is what a few of them had to say.

The strengths of the University of Alberta Geriatric Medicine residency program are the friendly and collegial staff, early exposure to complex internal medicine patients with geriatric syndromes and the flexibility of the program with respect to tailoring my future career aspirations.

The residency program is designed for graduated levels of independence depending on the level of trainees that prepares fellows for careers in academic and clinical Geriatric Medicine.

I am very happy to have chosen Edmonton and the program led by Dr Hussain for my fellowship training.

When I applied to Geriatric Medicine at the University of Alberta, I was looking for a program that would not only provide excellent geriatric medicine training but also support my interests in chronic pain, dementia care, and medical education. Having trained and worked in different countries and specialties before entering Geriatric Medicine, I wanted a place where diverse experiences were valued and where I could continue to grow academically. What convinced me to join was the genuine enthusiasm of the faculty during electives and the sense that residents were viewed as colleagues and future leaders.

Throughout my training, I have been continually supported by mentors who encouraged me to pursue research, present at national conferences, and develop educational initiatives that aligned with my interests.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been the opportunity to combine my passion for pain management with geriatric care through research and teaching focused on improving pain assessment and treatment for older adults living with dementia.

Looking back, I have grown tremendously as a clinician, educator, and researcher. For anyone considering this program, I would say that it offers outstanding training, meaningful mentorship, and the freedom to develop your own path while caring for some of the most complex patients in medicine.
