Hematology Residency At a Glance
After three years of Core Internal Medicine training, the subspecialty training in Hematology is a two-year program, approved by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.
PGY-4
The first year of residency is comprised of the following:
- Ward - 2 blocks (non-consecutive)
- UAH Consults - 1 block
- Hemepath - 3 blocks (consecutive)
- Research - 1 block
- Clinic Rotation - 2 blocks, (non-consecutive, includes a week of triage if in Core of Discipline)
- VTE/Thrombosis - 1 block
- Malignant Heme - 2 blocks (consecutive)
- Elective - 1 block
- Longitudinal Clinic - one half-day per week unless on vacation or away electives
PGY-5
The second year of residency is comprised of the following:
- Ward - 2 blocks (non-consecutive)
- UAH Consults - 1 block
- Hemepath - 3 blocks (2 consecutive first half of PGY5 & 1 block near the end of PGY5)
- BMT/Transplant - 1 block
- RAH Community Hematology Consults - 1 block
- Malignant Heme - 1 block
- Clinic/Triage rotation - 1 block (triage 1 week, 3 weeks clinics)
- Elective - 3 blocks
- Longitudinal Clinic - one half-day per week unless on vacation or away electives
Teaching Hospitals
University of Alberta Hospital (UAH)
The University of Alberta Hospital, situated in the Walter Mackenzie Health Centre (WMC), is the main teaching site for the University of Alberta. The WMC also contains the Mazankowski Heart Institute and the Stollery Children's Hospital. UAH is the centre of a health-care hub, surrounded by the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, Zeidler Ledcor Centre, Dianne and Irving Kipnes Health Research Academy, Cross Cancer Institute, Clinical Sciences Building and the Katz Group/Rexall Centre. Every building is connected by a pedway, which is especially helpful during winter. It has an open-concept design, maximizing resident exposure to sunlight. The WMC also has four coffee shops as well as a 24-hour Tim Hortons. The Clinical Sciences Building (CSB) houses the Geriatric Medicine Division Office on the first floor.
Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH)
The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is a major Edmonton hospital serving a diverse patient population from Edmonton, across Alberta, the Territories and Western Canada. It combines specialized patient care with education, research and advanced medical technologies.
As part of the University of Alberta’s Adult Hematology Residency Program, residents gain clinical experience through hematology consult services at both the RAH and University of Alberta Hospital.
Kaye Edmonton Clinic (KEC)
The Kaye Edmonton Clinic is home to nearly 100 specialized outpatient clinics, conveniently located under one roof. Together, multi-disciplinary teams provide services including diagnosis, consultation, treatment and rehabilitation services.
Vibe Clinic
Vibe is an Edmonton community clinic where hematologists work closely with surgeons, radiation oncologists, and other specialists to help patients understand their diagnosis, develop individualized treatment plans, coordinate aspects of care and provide surgical, chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic treatment.
