This flagship event of the Department of Medicine highlights the outstanding research conducted over the past year by more than 105 graduate students, 40 postdoctoral scholars, and 311 residents/fellows.
Congratulations to all of our research trainees who participated in this year’s Research and QI Day through poster and oral presentations. Your hard work, curiosity, and dedication to advancing knowledge were on full display throughout the event.
Presenting your research takes tremendous effort and courage, and every one of you should be proud of your contribution. While awards recognize a few presentations, the quality, innovation, and impact demonstrated by all trainees made this event such a success. We are proud of all that you have accomplished and look forward to seeing where your work takes you next.

About the Keynote Speakers
Dr. Philip Wells
Dr. Wells is Professor and Chair in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, Chief of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus, and Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Health Research Institute.
Dr. Wells is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist whose work has transformed the diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolism (VTE). He served as Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa for more than 12 years. Over his career, he has published more than 460 peer-reviewed papers, secured over $12 million in research funding as principal investigator, and delivered invited presentations worldwide.
Dr. Wells is best known for developing the widely used “Wells Models” for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). These clinical prediction tools enable physicians to stratify patients by risk and determine appropriate diagnostic pathways. By incorporating D-dimer testing into these algorithms, his work has reduced the need for unnecessary imaging, lowered health-care costs, and improved emergency department efficiency. He also demonstrated the safety of outpatient treatment for VTE, including patient self-administration of anticoagulants. These advances that have improved both patient experience and system capacity.
His research continues to shape modern care, including recent studies on thrombosis in cancer patients and the development of predictive tools for bleeding and clotting risk, incorporating machine learning and biomarkers.
At The Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Wells founded a globally unique thrombosis program operating 365 days a year, pioneering innovations such as same-day assessment and outpatient PE care.
Dr. Wells’ contributions have been recognized with multiple national and international awards, underscoring his lasting influence on patient care, research, and health system innovation.
Dr. Mayur Brahmania
Dr. Brahmania is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary practicing in Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology. After training in general and transplant Hepatology at the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, he undertook a research fellowship and earned a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA. He also holds advanced certification from the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQUIPS).
Dr. Brahmania has been involved with the Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) campaign as the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Quality Lead. In this leadership role, he helped develop the "top 5" list recommendations for Hepatology, and his group is currently working to develop strategies to benchmark quality indicators for liver disease across Canada. He also works with CWC on the “Diving into Overuse in Hospitals” campaign to promote Choosing Wisely principles in Canadian hospitals.
Dr. Brahmania is the current chair of the Health Analytics and Quality Committee at the University of Calgary, and his research interests focus on quality improvement initiatives to advance and standardize quality of care in patients living with liver disease. His work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals. He is also active in promoting quality improvement and patient safety within an educational setting by instructing and supervising resident quality improvement projects, as well as teaching students in medicine, business and other health-care disciplines.

About Me2 (Sumit) Majumdar
Dr. Me2 (Sumit) Majumdar was an exceptional and caring clinician, an outstanding educator, and a brilliant researcher. During his academic career, Dr. Majumdar brought more than $30 million in peer-reviewed funding to the University of Alberta for his work on both knowledge translation theory and controlled intervention and outcomes studies in the areas of osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr. Majumdar published over 300 peer-reviewed articles, many in top-ranked medical journals, and was recognized internationally for his work.
