EXFRM 2734 Mental Health in Occupational Therapy Practice

 

This course presents an overview of occupational therapy practice in mental health. Foundational knowledge, evidence-based practices and resources for working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia and/or ADHD will be presented. Regulatory requirements, assessment tools and psychosocial / occupation-based interventions will also be explored.

Course Hours & Recognition

The course is equivalent to approximately 12 content hours. 35 educational hours are awarded on the official certificate to reflect varying completion times.

  1. Students will understand the role of OT in addressing mental health from an occupational perspective, including theoretical and regulatory considerations.  
  2. Students will learn key components of a mental status exam and use of terminology reflective of mental health practice.
  3. Students will understand their role in suicide risk assessment and intervention.
  4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of symptomology and diagnostic criteria for common mental health diagnostic groups and impact on occupational participation. 
  5. Students will develop an understanding of basic psychosocial and occupation-based approaches to promote occupational participation. 
  6. Students will be aware of resources to further develop their competencies towards integrating mental health in their occupational therapy practice.

Course Facilitator

Rajni Champaneria, BScOT, MHA

Rajni is an Occupational Therapist, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Alberta, and a Master of Health Administration from the University of Regina. With 25 years of occupational therapy experience, Rajni has worked in vocational rehabilitation, acute care, and adult addiction and mental health services. She has held several educator and leadership roles, and has been engaged in local, provincial and national occupational therapy initiatives. In her commitment to advancing occupational therapy, Rajni is passionate about occupational therapists having mental health competencies to incorporate in their occupational therapy practice. 

The course content is delivered 100% asynchronously meaning there is no requirement to be online at a specific class date and time. Participants can complete the learning activities in a place and time of their choosing. Content is accessible twenty four (24) hours-a-day from any location with an internet connection.

There are no grades for this course. Instead, students receive a complete or incomplete score based on satisfactory completion of the course. To successfully complete the course students are required to work through all learning activities and achieve 60% on all the knowledge check quizzes at the end of each module. 

Upon completion of each module participants will be issued a faculty digital certificate noting the number of educational hours.  Participants may also claim a UofA Digital Badge via MyCreds as well as an official UofA non-credit transcript.
