WRITE 294 A2: Introduction to Writing Poetry: Home

U. Umezurike

This course will offer students a hands-on approach to the study of poetry. As we close read selected poems dealing with the concepts, intimations, and complexities of home, students will learn to appreciate the “voice” or the “speaker” in a poem. In addition, students will have the pleasure of working towards producing a “chapbook” of 10 or 12 pages by the end of the term. The chapbook will allow students to contemplate questions and meanings behind home and the environment, as narrowly and broadly conceived. By producing such a chapbook, students will discover that they can translate an idea, image, impression, or experience into poetry as they find and develop their own “voice” and poetics as creative writers.
