L.H. Thomas Lecture presented by Dr. Beverly Lemire

28 February 2024

Join the Department of History, Classics, and Religion for the annual L.H. Thomas Lecture on Thursday, March 21 at 4:30 PM in Henderson Hall (1-17 Rutherford Library South, University of Alberta).

Histories of empire, race and gender are illuminated through the politics of dress. The Caribbean was a key source of imperial wealth extraction; fashions shaped the public face of this savage system with Black women fashion-makers persisting and defying. Please join us for “Fashion Politics and the Power of Dress: A History of Whiteness & Empire, c. 1660-1820", presented by Beverly Lemire, C.M., who explores 'whiteness' and its material dimensions, from soap and laundry to masquerade balls. Reception to follow.
