Soil Science Collection

Vertical soil specimen monoliths depicting a gradient of colour and texture changes

The Soil Science Collection in the Department of Renewable Resources consist of a series of monoliths - blocks of soil as they appear in nature - from across Alberta, Canada, and the world. The collection reveals how soils develop in diverse landscapes, their characteristics and classification in the Canadian System of Soil Classification, and is particularly useful for researchers, instructors, and students focused on renewable resources and environmental sciences. Ongoing research in soil ecology, landscape dynamics, carbon and nitrogen cycling, and soil chemical properties illustrates the environmental value of the collection.
