Tamseela Chughtai is one of 18 students from the University of Alberta's Certificate in Bridging to Canadian Physical Therapy Practice program who celebrated their graduation on Saturday, August 26 at the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Chughtai was a practicing physical therapist in Pakistan and Malaysia. Determined to work hard and become a physical therapist in Alberta, she decided to take the PT Bridging Certificate program at U of A to prepare her for the licensing exam in Alberta.

"It has helped me in regaining my confidence and has given me a feeling of Yes, I can do it!"

A recipient of the Cheung Family Award, Chughtai is thankful to the people who nominated her. She was able to use the student award towards her MSc. Rehabilitation Science degree, which she completed this past March.

The Bridging Certificate program at the University of Alberta has graduated internationally-trained physiotherapists from all over the world: India, Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, Nigeria, Colombia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Germany, Ireland, Bulgaria and Canada. The program includes a one week full-time academic introduction (August) and one mandatory clinical placement which is 6 weeks full-time. As well, a physical therapist practicing in the local community is assigned to each student as a mentor and guide for learning integration and application. Mentors will provide access to clinical experiences three to six hours a week during the time the academic courses are running. Clinical placement is offered during the months of June, July or August. The Bridging Certificate program will take a minimum of 12 months to complete. A majority of the students who have successfully graduated work as physical therapists for Alberta Health Services.

Congratulations to all of our PT Bridging Certificate Program graduates!
