Don't use your teeth as a tool this holiday season

Using your teeth to tear tape, to bite off tags, to crack nuts, or even to open a bottle of nail polish might seem harmless enough, but teeth are not tools!

Biting or chewing on hard objects, or clenching and grinding, can make our teeth more susceptible to cracks. When the outer hard tissues of the tooth are cracked, chewing can cause movement of the fractured segments and can cause further damage.

Alexandra Sheppard, Associate Clinical Professor, Dental Hygiene at the University of Alberta, School of Dentistry, provides information and tips on how to keep a healthy mouth during the holidays.
