16 July 2013

The School of Dentistry's Continuing Dental Education (CDE) division is pleased to announce a new course-Introduction to Forensic Dentistry. This course will have attendees watching and participating in a mass fatality workshop scenario using dry skulls.

Forensic dentistry is the application of dental knowledge to those criminal and civil laws that are enforced by police agencies in a criminal justice system.

Investigative agencies will often call upon forensic dentists to assist in the identification of human remains through determining age, race, occupation, previous dental history and socioeconomic status of unidentified human beings derived from teeth. This is done using dental records including radiographs, ante-mortem (prior to death) and post-mortem photographs and DNA.

Join us in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 8 and 9, 2013, when keynote speakers-Dr. Ed Herschaft, Dr. James Mah, Dr. David Ord, Dr. Ray Rawson and Dr. Geoffrey Sperber-will present the basics of forensic dentistry beginning with its historical origins to modern advancements.

After an introduction to basic principles, application of this information will be demonstrated in current cases, training in mass fatalities and participation in a mass fatality workshop scenario using dry skull remains. Time permitting a tour of the Las Vegas Coroner's Office will be available.
