Provost Portfolio Reorganization

To achieve the goals of the University of Alberta for Tomorrow initiative, our new model centralizes many services and administrative activities, processes, and functions that are common to faculties and units across the university.

The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) portfolio houses many of the university’s academic and administrative departments, including:

Transformation in the Provost portfolio has been ongoing for the past year, and has included:

• Implementing a two Deputy Provosts model, dividing the large portfolio between a Deputy Provost (Academic) and a Deputy Provost (Students and Enrolment)
• Realigning the delivery of centralized student services and standing up the Student Service Centre
• Establishing the new U of A Online and Continuing Education unit to lead the growth of online and continuing education opportunities across the university
• Reorganizing U of A International towards a centre of expertise model to better lead and facilitate strategic international policies, priorities and engagement
• Creating a new Vice-provost of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion position to better advance our EDI activities at the leadership level

Key features

The total annual spend in the Provost’s portfolio has decreased by more than 20% since 2019, resulting in more than $20 million in total savings. The new structure also reduces the Provost’s direct reports from 24 to 12, decreases the number of managerial layers in the portfolio, and increases average team size in alignment with SET principles.

Next steps

The reorganization of this portfolio better allocates resources around the University of Alberta’s core teaching and research mission, and creates opportunities for collaboration and shared efficiencies. The Provost leadership team will continue to refine, grow and advance key areas of the portfolio, including strengthening our commitment to the One University vision, and supporting the ongoing implementation of the three colleges in connection and collaboration with the three stand-alone faculties.
