Cohort Models

A foundational strength of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program is the cohort study model. A cohort is a model of teacher education where students progress through their program at the same time, taking many of the same courses together.

The cohort model is a key element of the program’s success, and we have found that studying alongside a set group of peers provides an additional layer of support. This opportunity for students to learn from each other often leads to lifelong relationships that support continued community and professional growth as teachers.

Many ATEP graduates identify the support they received through their cohort was unlike any other post-secondary experience they have had and was salient to their success in the program. As of 2021, ATEP offers three types of cohorts.

Community-Based Learning Opportunities

ATEP partners with community-based colleges, through course transfer agreements to offer a 4-year Bachelor of Education Elementary Generalist degree. Course delivery for the first two years, or up to 60 credits, may occur at the campus of partner and regional colleges. Students apply for admission into the University of Alberta’s Aboriginal Teacher Education Program to complete their degree either online, or in person, at the University of Alberta’s North Campus. This collaborative model allows students flexibility to complete their Bachelor of Education degree by beginning their studies at a college site.

Please note: After-degree students are also welcome to apply to ATEP.

On-Campus Cohorts

On-Campus cohorts complete their 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education degree at the University of Alberta’s North Campus in Edmonton, AB. This cohort model allows students to experience campus life and connect with students across the university through on-campus activities. Additionally, they are able to build strong support networks and peer relations through the cohort model. Indigenous learners are able to pursue their education through a major university while remaining closely connected to Indigenous values. ATEP offers study space and a student lounge on campus to provide a comfortable and quiet space to study.

While this cohort is designed for direct-entry students, students with transferable credits from a previous post-secondary institution are encouraged to apply to ATEP. Please refer to the Admission Requirements page for additional information.

Online Cohorts

Online cohorts complete their Bachelor of Elementary degree courses in an online format. However, field experience is completed face-to-face in a school setting. This model provides access for students in distant locations to complete their Bachelor of Education degree, particularly those in rural and remote communities. The format affords students flexibility and the ability to remain close to their culture, community, and support networks. A reliable internet connection, as well as a working computer or laptop with up-to-date software (Microsoft Office, etc.), is required.

While this cohort is designed for direct-entry students, students with transferable credits from a previous post-secondary institution are encouraged to apply to ATEP. Please refer to the Admission Requirements page for additional information.
