Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships provide a unique opportunity for talented students to receive scholarship funding from Global Affairs Canada to temporarily conduct research at a Canadian university for 4 months (undergraduate-level) or 5-6 months (graduate-level).

Applications from eligible students studying at international universities are accepted on an annual basis at the University of Alberta for the following three scholarship programs:

Applicants are responsible for reviewing the above webpages to determine if they are eligible to be considered for these scholarships. 

Successful candidates who receive funding are then invited to temporarily perform research at the University of Alberta for either 4 months or 5-6 months as an academic visitor.

The best way to stay informed about the competition launching is to check the Scholarship News website, starting in mid-January each year.

Global Affairs Canada updates everyone, including prospective applicants, host supervisors, and university administrators with the same information at the same time via the above-linked Scholarship News website.

For example, the competition for the SEED-2, SICS, and ELAP programs were announced between January 20-22, 2026 for national application deadlines in mid-late March 2026.

Yes, this is a very tight timeline. Canadian post-secondaries are responsible for nominating eligible students, rather than individual applicants applying on their own. As such, the U of A application deadlines for SEED-2, SICS, and ELAP tend to fall a few weeks before the national deadlines, such as in late February or early March. This is common practice across our peer institutions. 

We kindly ask that you please refrain from reaching out to our office to ask specific questions about the competition until after late January or whenever the competition is launched, as all information up until that point is subject to change and has changed in recent years, rendering any advice that could be provided in November, December, or early January a moot point for all stakeholders involved. While International Student + Visitor Services staff who administer the inbound research programs work closely together with our Go Abroad colleagues who administer the inbound study program option, there are differing requirements and separate application procedures for study vs. research exchange.
