Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) and Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) co-hosted a day of "Fostering Reflective Capacity Through Interactive Reflective Writing" by Dr. Hedy Wald on Monday, December 13, 2010. The day consisted of a foundational seminar and skills practice workshop.

Dr. Hedy Wald used a combination of didactic and interactive learning to explore the concept of fostering reflective capacity through interactive reflective writing within an interdisciplinary context. Frameworks for enhancing educational impact of reflective writing and assessing students' reflection level within reflective writing pedagogy was presented and discussed. The role of reflection in promoting personal and professional development was explored.

Part 2: Dr. Hedy Wald combined didactic and interactive approaches for further skill building in framework application to enhance educational impact of reflective writing, using health professions students' narratives and our own.

Dr. Wald
Dr. Hedy Wald is a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University where she is a consultant in narrative medicine/reflective writing to the family medicine clerkship and conducts research on interactive reflective writing in medical education. She provides psychological consultation to rehabilitation hospitals and conducts neuropsychological assessment for neurology outpatient practices. Her academic publications on reflective writing and fostering of reflective capacity have appeared in journals such as Academic Medicine, Medical Education, and Journal of General Internal Medicine.
