Qualifications

  • You must be in grade 10, 11 or 12 at the time of application.
  • Applications will be considered from students both inside and outside the Edmonton area, but within the province of Alberta. 
  • This is a paid internship. Some but not all funding will be limited to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • You may apply again, even if you have previously participated in the HIP program.
  • You can apply for up to 6 weeks. You will be considered even if you can only participate for a few weeks due to travel or summer school commitments during July/August. However, payments can only be given for the number of hours spent in-person at the university. Students can spend a maximum of 25 hours each week in-person. HIP 2024 internship begins Tuesday, July 2, 2024 and finishes Friday, Aug 9, 2024
  • Students are NOT eligible to apply for a second HIP position.

Required Supporting Documents

  • We will consider Math 30-1 (or Math 20-1 if Math 30-1 is not yet taken) + English 20-1 (or English 30-1) in the preliminary selection criteria. A minimum of average 85% is required; beyond 90% the average will not make any difference. Priority will be given to students in Grade 11, following other similar programs supported by the Alberta Government.
  • You may summarize marks in up to 3 other Science courses; e.g., Bio 20-1, Chem 20-1, and Physics 20-1, either completed or in progress.
  • Record of marks can be obtained from SchoolZone or PowerSchool. Formal grade report from your regional school authority is not required at this stage, this may be requested at a later stage.
  • Please highlight any special circumstances; e.g., under-represented groups including female, rural/remote communities, first nations communities etc.
  • Highlight any bi-lingual capabilities, e.g., French Immersion, and other dual language programs.
  • We will not consider online courses, evening schools from specialized colleges, home school grades etc.
  • PAT scores are not required.
  • Summarize any awards and achievements in sports and music.

There is no need to include any reference or nomination letters. However, schools of selected applicants could be contacted to verify accuracy of PowerSchool/SchoolZone documents.

Application Tips

  • Be professional—proofread your application, follow the instructions and submit your application as early as possible.
  • Students with the most experience or highest marks are not always chosen. Supervisors also look for students that have matching interests, a curiosity about the field and that are self-motivated.

Notification

Decisions will be communicated via email by May 15, 2024. A match-making session will be held in June 2024. The in-person component of HIP will start in early July 2024.
