What to Expect

Projects

You will have a supervisor and in-lab mentors to direct your project.

The projects are selected based on providing you with a meaningful research experience within a reasonable time frame (the task should be able to be completed in a 6 week period based on a 30 hour week).

Projects vary year to year, but in the past students have had the opportunity to work in AI, robotics, and smart phone and arduino development.

Lunch and Learns

Lunch and Learn sessions are once a week and provide you with:

• an opportunity to meet your fellow students
• a guest speaker who informs about various topics relevant to computing science and student life

Previous topics include "The Games Computers (and Humans) Play", "Introduction to Cybersecurity", and "How to Build AI".  You must provide your own lunch.

HIP Poster Session

Each student will be expected to create a scientific poster based on the project they are working on throughout the summer.

Travel and Accommodations

You are responsible for getting to and from the University.

If you are applying to the HIP program from out of town you will be responsible for finding your own accommodations. University of Alberta dormitories do not allow minors who are not registered in the University to stay unaccompanied.
