2017 K-POP Singing and Dance Contest

The Department of the East Asian Studies, the University of Alberta and Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver opens the 2017 K-POP singing and dance contest on November 3, 2017 at 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Following our successful Korean Cultural Festival in 2016, this event will be another excellent opportunity to share the elements of modern-day Korean culture with the rest of the University of Alberta community and ultimately, strengthen ties between the University of Alberta, the Edmonton community and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea.

There will be various performances featuring our Korean language program students in terms of K-pop dancing and singing.

Qualifications:

  • 17 years of age or older
  • Not enrolled in a secondary school at the time of the contest
  • Qualify for one of the contest categories

(1) K-POP Singing (2 members in the maximum)

  • No limit on hours of Korean study
  • Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean

(2) K-POP Dance (5 members in the maximum)

  • No limit on hours of Korean study
  • Can have either or both parents/guardian who are native speakers of Korean

(1) Teams from Korean language classes

- can invite only one person as a member who is not from the Korean language classes.

(2) Teams out of the Korean language

- Public contest: anyone is welcome.

Singing & Dancing Length and number of group members:

  • Singing: less than 3 minutes, 2 members in the maximum.
  • Dance: less than 4 minutes, 5 members in the maximum.
  • Mixture of songs for dance is allowed.
    Note: Contestants who exceed the time limits will be subject to demerit points.

Judges and Evaluation Criteria:

  • Singing will be assessed according to the technical skills, pronunciation, manner of presentation, and audience's response.
  • Dance will be assessed according to the content, manner of presentation, technical skills, and audience's response.

Certificates and prizes:

  • All contestants will be awarded a participation certificate and a souvenir
  • Top 3 winners in each category will be awarded certificates of award and prizes. (The 1st winner: $500 for a team, 2nd winner: $300 for a team, 3rd winner: $100 for a team)

Small supper (Kimbap and beverages) will be provided at the reception after the contests.
