Department of Medicine Workplace Culture

Culture of Wellbeing

The Department of Medicine (DoM) continually strives to create and sustain a workplace culture that promotes the central principles of belonging and inclusion, wellness, and safety through our five pillars of leadership, transparency and accountability, professional development, collaboration and mentorship, and innovation and research.

This will be achieved through pursuit of eight objectives: excellence, engagement, community, relationships, curiosity, resilience & adaptability, purpose-driven, and kindness.

Five Pillars that Support Our Work

1. Innovation and Research

The DoM is part of an academic institution where we are dedicated to the sharing of new ideas, developing and implementing innovations, patient safety and quality, excellence in education, and pursuing discovery in the field of medicine.

2. Collaboration and Mentorship

We work together in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, patient care, and a commitment to mentoring peers, trainees, and associates.

3. Leadership

Our leaders demonstrate the values central to the improvement of workplace culture, and provide guidance as we work together towards achieving a common goal of improving the workplace culture.

4. Transparency and Accountability

We hold ourselves and others accountable for our behavior, actions, work, and words.

5. Professional Development

Professional development is paramount to improve skills, knowledge, and experience for both individual and group success.

Eight Objectives

  1. Excellence is the standard we are striving for in all of our endeavors.
  2. Engagement refers to active participation and investment in our work.
  3. Community is the environment in which we work and the people we work with, as we work collaboratively in our pursuits.
  4. Relationships are important to build the community as we work alongside each other in our day to day activities.
  5. Curiosity is a core University of Alberta value as we approach the world with a strong desire to learn.
  6. Resilience and Adaptability are demonstrated as we strive to be ready to make changes and to be ready for whatever challenges us and to recover quickly from setbacks or difficulties.
  7. Purpose-Driven reflects how we aim to align our work with the core mission and values of the DoM.
  8. Kindness/Empathy is being generous and considerate of others in all of our interactions and work. This includes thinking "ill before evil" when assessing the behaviours of others.

Central Principles

  • Safety refers to physical and psychological safety in the workplace, and includes an environment that is free from intimidation and harassment.
  • Wellbeing of individuals and groups is a priority and includes physical, emotional, intellectual, and vocational wellbeing.
  • Belonging and inclusion. The DoM is a place where all individuals feel respected, valued, and supported, and have equitable access to resources and opportunities.
