Funding

Students accepted to our MSc or PhD programs are offered funding support in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) or a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) stipend for an 8-month period from September to April. Funding rates are based on the collective agreement between the University and the Graduate Students Association. GTAs and GRAs typically work for 12 hours per week. MSc students are offered this funding for 2 years and PhD students are offered this funding for 4 years. In addition, some tuition relief is provided to international students when funds are available. Many of our graduate students are also offered GRA-ships over May-August. Some post-candidacy PhD students are offered the opportunity to be principal instructors for undergraduate courses, depending on available funds.

The Department nominates graduate students for University-internal scholarships, where appropriate. Canadian and permanent resident students are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC).
