This has been an incredible month for FoMD achievements in all realms-research, teaching, patient care and innovation. Congratulations to everyone listed below and those we haven't heard of yet. Your accomplishments make our faculty shine!


The Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association 2017 Awards dinner took place on March 2. Congratulations to all the winners who were honoured!

The Emergency Medicine 2017 Outstanding Teacher Award has been awarded to Damian Paton-Gayof Critical Care Medicine and Pat San Agustin of Emergency Medicine.



Helly Goez of Pediatrics and Tracey Hillerof Undergraduate Medical Education have been awarded the University's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion awards for their commitment to inclusiveness in the faculty. Great job!



The CAME Certificate of Merit was awarded to three outstanding educators in the faculty. Congratulations to Lawrence Cheung of Internal Medicine, Lyn Sonnenberg of Pediatrics, and Martin Moran of Family Medicine. Great work!



Congratulations to Frances Plane of Pharmacology on receiving the prestigious McCalla Professorship for her excellence in teaching. Well done!



George Goldsand, Professor Emeritus with Infectious Diseases has been awarded the American College of Physicians Laureate Medallion for his lifetime of contributions to the medical field. We are delighted to celebrate his many accomplishments.



Peter Hwang, Internal Medicine has earned the CIHR Phase 2 Clinician Scientist Salary award, 2017-2020. All the best to him in his next phase of research.



Georg Schmolzer and his research team have achieved the green Labs Gold Certification for the ninth floor lab of the Medical Sciences building. The Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation lab is the first in the building to achieve this certification. Well done!


Pediatrics


Geoff Ball, Michele Dyson, and Maryam Kebbe have received funding from the Health Outcomes Improvement Fund provided through AHS MNCY Strategic Clinical Network for a study to explore teens' barriers and facilitators in changing lifestyle habits. One of the goals is to develop a deck of CONversation Cards for teens to complement the cards they developed a few years ago for parents.


Hair Massacure 2016-2017 grants were awarded to seven applicants with $50,000 for cancer research, commencing July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Congrats to all involved!

Residents & Students

Celeste Lavallee, grad student in Gastroenterology & Nutrition, has received the Harry M Vars award at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, under the supervision of Dr. Justine Turner. This is the third consecutive year that one of Dr. Turner's lab students won this award, previously won by David LimPhD, Department of Surgery, in 2015 and 2016.


Patrick Duke, MD 2016 has been awarded the Mewburn Memorial Medal in Surgery. The Medal is offered annually to a convocating student on the basis of outstanding merit in Surgery. Dr. Frank Mewburn (1858-1929) was the founding Professor of Surgery at the University of Alberta in 1922, and was instrumental in establishing clinical teaching in Surgery at the University of Alberta.


AMA/CMA Emerging Leaders in Health Promotion Award:

Andree Vincent, Medical Student, for her project "Starlight performance camp"


Michiyo Maruyama, Cardiac Surgery Resident for her project "Play, learn, teach!"


Catherine Cheng, Psychiatry resident, for her project "Use of novel multi-sensory dementia tools to improve quality of life of seniors with dementia and their caregivers"
