Undergraduate Summer Students' Research Program

The Undergraduate Summer Students' Research Program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta provides undergraduate and medical students the opportunity to participate in summer research under the supervision of a faculty member (A1.1 or C1.1 appointments). Summer research positions are available for two, three or four months each year between May and August. Approximately 200 students participate annually, making this the largest program of its kind in Canada.

Students are funded from multiple sources including faculty endowments, the UA Office of the Provost and VP Academic, Alberta Innovates, and the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre (NACTRC).

Special COVID-19 Message for all Summer Students and Supervisors

We know that being on campus is essential for our undergraduate summer students to gain research experience, however we also need to provide a safe working environment. As mentioned in previous messages, undergraduate summer students will be welcomed to campus once all of the safety protocols have been clearly established, and we are confident that we are not exceeding the capacity in our research spaces to meet physical distancing guidelines. At this time, we are anticipating that summer students will be welcomed into our FoMD research facilities by July 2nd. If the ramp up of research goes smoothly with uniform adherence to safety guidelines, we may invite them back to campus earlier. We will notify supervisors when summer students will be allowed to conduct research on campus.
