It may still look like winter outside, but the many talents of the FoMD community have been springing up this past month. Congratulations to all staff, faculty, students and alumni on your achievements.


International Recognition

Glen Jickling, '03 MD, Department of Medicine, received the Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize from the American Academy of Neurology.


Georg Schmolzer, Department of Pediatrics, received a Thrasher Research Fund.


Erin Wright, Department of Surgery, received a Fellowship ad hominem from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Faculty, Staff & Alumni Awards

Anthony (Tony) Fields, '74 MD, Department of Oncology Professor Emeritus, was awarded a 2018 Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment from the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. Fields will be presenting at the Department of Oncology's 25th anniversary celebration on May 25, 2018.

Jacob Jaremko, Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, is the recipient of a 2018 CAR Young Investigator Award.

Dina Kao, '99 MD, Department of Medicine, received the department's Translational Research Award.


Bin Zheng, Department of Surgery, received an NSERC Engage Grant for his project "Unveiling the Hidden Features in Endoscopic Videos: Implications for Skill Training and Patient Safety."


Anita Verhun, FoMD Financial Assistant, is a 2018 U of A Wellness Champion for her positive influence and support of a healthy work environment. Thank you for all you do to keep our workplace healthy.


Honourable mention goes to the FoMD staff and alumni who have been nominated for a 2018 AHS President's Excellence Award. We wish you the best of luck in the final selection.

Reed Sutton, Department of Medicine, received the Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's (CIHR CGS-M) and Walter H. Johns Graduate Fellowship.


Nariman Sepehrvand, Department of Medicine, received the Graduate Student Association Research Assistant Award.


Maryam Kebbe, Department of Pediatrics, was awarded the Martha Piper Award from the Graduate Student Association.
