As the year comes to a close there are many successes to celebrate in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Congratulations on all you have accomplished.


Faculty Recognition

Bruce Ritchie, '78 MD, Department of Medicine, was recognized twice, with a LIfetime Achievement Award from the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alberta, and was named Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

Robert Burrell, Department of Biomedical Engineering has been elected Fellow of the (U.S.) National Academy of Inventors. Read more about his achievements here.


Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology's Jason Acker, '97 MSc, '00 PhD, and Janet Elliott have been named Fellows of the International Society for Cryobiology. They will receive the prestigious Basile J. Luyet medal in July 2019, joining only two other Canadians who have received the award.


Khalid Aziz, Department of Pediatrics, was named 2018 Clinician Leader by the Pediatric Chairs of Canada.

Suresh Nayar, Department of Surgery, was named Fellow of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics (pictured below).


Irehobhude Iyioha, John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, received the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award on International Volunteers Day, December 5, 2018. She is one of six recipients in the province to be recognized by the Honourable Minister Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.


Mentoring Excellence

Cathy Flood, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, along with fellow Strathcona swim team coaches, earned Edmonton Public Schools' 2017-18 district recognition.


Fiona Lawson, Department of Medicine; Edward Masson, '92 MD, Department of Surgery; and Anil Walji, Department of Surgery (Division of Anatomy), will be honoured with CAME Certificate of Merit awards for their contributions to education. The awards will be presented in April 2019 at the Canadian Conference on MEdical Education.

Paige Grant, MSc student, Department of Biochemistry, (supervisor: Michael Overduin), and George Han, '18 BiomRrchCt, MSc student, Department of Biochemistry, (supervisor: David Westaway), both received the Lionel B. Pett Grad. Scholarship in Biochemistry.

Zaid Almaayah, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pediatrics (supervisor: Jason Dyck) received the 2018 Governor General's Gold Medal. This award recognizes the doctoral graduate who achieves the highest scholarly achievement at the University of Alberta.
