7.3 Scholarships

The University of Alberta as well as our own Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have scholarships and awards available to support graduate students. Students are encouraged to use these links to explore the details of these funding opportunities, including the application requirements and relevant deadlines.

There are two mechanisms through which graduate students may apply for scholarships: external and internal. External scholarships refer to major awards from provincial and national agencies, which include (but is not limited to) Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AIHS), Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Other support may be available from certain foundations in specific research areas. Graduate students are directed to consult the relevant agency website for additional details.

Internal scholarships refer to awards available to all University of Alberta graduate students and awards available to Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate students only. There are two competitions per year for assignment of internal scholarship nominations. Upon notification of award availability, the Graduate Studies Coordinator will email students with an invitation to apply for the internal scholarship competition. Applications are ranked based on the criteria for each award (generally, these criteria include academic excellence, research productivity, research proposals, and letters of reference). A competition for a relatively larger pool of scholarships is held in the summer (Fall Term Scholarship Competition), and a competition for a relatively smaller pool of scholarships and bursaries is held in January (Winter Term Scholarship Competition).
