Program Changes and Approval

The Provost & Vice-President Academic is responsible for all academic programs at the University of Alberta. The Office supports faculties in moving program proposals through required approval processes.

Quality Assurance

High quality teaching and research programs are a hallmark of the University of Alberta. That’s why the institution is committed to a rigorous quality assurance program that both maintains and builds upon the existing strengths of the U of A’s academic units and faculties.

Indigenous Initiatives

In consultation with stakeholders, the University is striving to develop a thoughtful, respectful, meaningful and sustainable response to the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Deans Selections and Reviews

The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) has administrative responsibility for the selection and review of Deans. Recommendations on the appointment and reappointment of Deans are made to the President. Find information about Deans selection and review processes currently underway.

The University of Alberta strives to inspire, model and support excellence in teaching, learning, research and service. The University of Alberta honors members of its community with a variety of funding and awards in these areas.


Role of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) 

The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) leads the academic mission of the University and works with the team of vice-presidents to ensure that all portfolios and goals are aligned towards achievement of the University’s vision and strategic plan. The academic portfolio is diverse, and encompasses student recruitment, retention and well-being, including liaising with student leaders on the issues affecting the student experience; selection and leadership of the University’s nineteen Deans; facilitation of academic program development and review; international engagement; stewardship of the learning environment; and relations with the professoriate. The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) ensures appropriate resource allocation to achieve the University's academic mission, and oversees the support, infrastructure and administrative units that underpin that mission.

Comprehensive Institutional Plan 

Each year, the University prepares a Comprehensive Institutional Plan (CIP) for submission to the Government of Alberta. This three-year document is a valuable information source and communication tool that helps demonstrate alignment between institutional and government priorities.
