M. Whitecotton-Carroll - 01 February 2023

We caught up with Phil Badawy, the latest member of the Sociology Department who joined us in 2022.  Below, he answers some of our questions!

Tell us about your research?

My research broadly focuses on stress exposure in work-family life, status inequality, and health. As part of this, I examine the impact of a variety of working conditions on workers' quality of family life and well-being. One of my ongoing projects draws on longitudinal data of Canadian workers to examine how the COVID-19 pandemic changed workers' experiences both on and off the job, especially regarding the impact of working from home.

What inspired you to enter this field?

I have always had a passion for helping people and understanding health and mental health, and I know that some of the more chronic and potent stressors in our lives come from the prominent domains of work and family. It seemed natural for me to make this the focus of my work, especially because I spend a lot of time reflecting about the meaning of work-life balance in my own life.

Tell us about your teaching.

Currently I'm teaching Introduction to Social Methodology (SOC 315) and Sociology of Work and Industry (SOC 363).

What are your impressions of Edmonton/the University of Alberta so far (if applicable)?

I feel very fortunate to be able to live in the beautiful city of Edmonton while I work at the University of Alberta. Even the commute to work is an enjoyable experience for me because of the amazing view of the North Saskatchewan River.

What are your hobbies, or things you like to do outside of work?

I'm currently living downtown with my partner, and we love exploring all the new places to eat together.

Welcome to the Department Phil, we are glad to have you!
