As the Catholic college affiliated with the University of Alberta, St. Joseph’s College (SJC) has been a Christian presence on the University campus for more than 90 years. SCJ is a caring community of academics, students, residents and members of our worshiping community. Grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, SJC is committed to integrating faith and life and to promoting teaching excellence and engaged learning in the context of a Catholic ethos.
Our excellent professors teach courses that address many thought-provoking topics that encourage critical thinking. Students taking SJC courses engage with biblical studies, Catholic education, Christian ethics, contemporary culture, history, philosophy, religious studies, science, social justice, sport, theology, service learning and many other areas of inquiry. Our courses are open to all University of Alberta students and carry UofA Arts credits.
Our men’s and women’s residences are also open to all UofA students. Residents enjoy a close-knit and supportive community, excellent meals and extracurricular activities, including the St. Joe’s Rangers and the Kateri Islanders. Those connected with SJC also have the opportunity to participate in small groups focussed on Bible study or some aspect of spirituality. The Catholic community celebrates the Eucharist several times each week in the college chapel, where all are welcome.
Finally, as a supportive Christian community, SJC offers access to resources that encourage and support good physical and mental health, including spiritual direction and counseling, wellness programs and the services of a qualified psychologist.
