ADI principal investigator, Geoff Ball, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, will oversee a newly awarded team grant to investigate severe obesity in children and their families. The $1.6 million grant will fund seven different projects related to severe pediatric obesity over five years.
Over 90% of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are obese. Traditionally, only type 1 diabetes was seen in young people, however there has been a rapid increase of children and young people presenting type 2 diabetes as a direct result of childhood obesity.
The grant was funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Alberta Innovates -- Health Solutions, the Canadian Obesity Network and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care.
