Applying / Nominating to become Chancellor

Can I apply to be Chancellor or do I have to be nominated?

Individuals can apply or be nominated. They will need to submit a complete nomination package, which includes three letters of reference. One of the reference letters must be from an individual who agrees to be the nominator.

What is the deadline to apply?

12 pm MST on Tuesday, December 5, 2023

What is needed in a full application package?

  • Completed and signed nomination form and consent form
  • A letter outlining the nominee’s interest in the Chancellorship
  • Biographical summary - this may include work-life journey, various kinds of formal and informal educational experience, contributions to communities and public endeavors (both as a leader and as a member of a volunteer team) and other accomplishments and milestones.
  • Three letters of reference, including one from the nominator.

What is a biographical summary?

A biographical summary should describe the nominee’s work-life journey, various kinds of formal and informal educational experience, contributions to communities and public endeavors (both as a leader and as a member of a volunteer team) and/or other accomplishments and milestones. It may take the form of a narrative (having the form of a story), résumé, or C.V. (curriculum vitae).

The biographical summary may be submitted either in writing (length: 2 - 4 pages) or as an audio or video file (length: 4 - 8 minutes). If submitting audio files, we recommend recording in a quiet, distraction free space. If submitting video files, we recommend filming your head and shoulders with a neutral background in a quiet, distraction-free location with good lighting, and minimal clutter in the camera’s range.

Support is available to remove barriers for eligible applicants who encounter limitations or barriers to their ability to submit a nomination package. Selection / Election of Chancellor

How is the Chancellor selected?

Following an extensive evaluation process, which includes interviews with shortlisted candidates, the Nomination of Chancellor Joint Committee will nominate 2 to 3 candidates. On March 15, 2024, the U of A Senate will elect the Chancellor.

When does the selection happen?

  • Deadline for Applications – December 4, 2023 (Noon MST)
  • In person interviews with Nomination of Chancellor Joint Committee – February 3, 4, 5, and 19, 2024
  • Presentation/Interview/Election/Confirmation at Senate Plenary – March 15, 2024
  • Installation of the Chancellor at Spring Convocation – June 13, 2024

What is the University of Alberta Senate?

The University of Alberta Senate, an independent body of diverse community leaders and University representatives, is valued for the role it places in successfully examining, fostering, and celebrating the achievements and excellence of the University of Alberta, resulting in an enhanced relationship with the community.
