Korean Teachers' Conference

We are pleased to inform you that the instructors of the Korean Language Program at the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta cordially invite you to the Korean Teachers' Conference on Nov. 22, 2013. The purpose of this conference is to promote and share the department language instructors' knowledge for teaching languages. The theme of this conference is 'Teaching Language Curriculum and Pedagogy,' and we have 6 faculty staff in the Department of East Asian Studies to present some interesting topics on language teaching and pedagogy in the conference. We believe that this conference will be a great place for all the participants from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language programs to share and exchange their thoughts and ideas on their teaching experiences. All instructors and graduate students who are interested in teaching languages in the Department of East Asian Studies are welcome to the conference. Suspension of intake to the Certificate in Translation Studies in Chinese

In view of our diminishing number of faculty positions (2.5 professors in Chinese), the Department has made the difficult decision to suspend new registrations in the Certificate in Translation Studies in Chinese, effective immediately. This means that students already in the Certificate will be able to complete it, but no new students will be admitted. The required paperwork for the suspension will be filed in the coming weeks. Linguistic and Interactional Units in Everyday Speech a Cross-Linguistic Perspective

This workshop focuses on 'units' as the main topic of discussion. We will have presentations by each of the participants on this central notion in linguistics, coupled with discussion and collaborative examination of everyday speech data from typologically diverse languages including English, Finnish, French, Japanese, Javanese, Mandarin, Miyako, and Nuuchahnulth. Some of the general questions which we would like to address in the workshop include:


Languages and Cultures of Okinawa Learn about Okinawan language endangerment, language policy, multilingualism, linguistic fieldwork while gaining insight into the history, politics and culture(s)/ society of Okinawa. We will closely examine one of the minority languages, Miyako, to gain a deeper understanding of these issues. Students will give reports focusing on areas such as education, religion, sports, music, dance, food, the Ryuukyuu Kingdom, and the US military presence. Click the ttitle for more information!
