Honors

Bachelor of Arts with Honors

A Faculty of Arts student with sufficiently high grades may choose to take an honors degree instead of the general BA degree. Success in an honors program accelerates entry into graduate and professional work in the area of specialization. It is a good career investment as well as providing a challenging undergraduate experience. Each department of the Faculty of Arts offers its own honors program. Combined programs such as Economics and Math, Economics and Political Science, Economics and a foreign language, etc. are also available.

Entrance to the BA Honors program requires an AGPA of 3.0 and with an average of 3.3 or better in Economics courses.

Promotion from year to year requires a GPA of at least 3.0 with an average of at least 3.3 in all Economics courses. Honors in Economics requires a minimum of ★54 and a maximum of ★72 in Economics at the senior-level. See the University Calendar for a detailed description of the requirements of the program.

Students in the Honors Economics Program pursue one of two routes:

Honors Economics - Graduate Study Route

Students who choose this route gain a very strong foundation in economic theory, as well as valuable applied skills in econometrics, mathematics, and statistics. The Graduate Study route prepares students for further education in economics, such as an MA in Economics, an MA in Economics and Finance, or a PhD in Economics.

Honors Economics - Essay Route

Students who choose the Essay Route have more flexibility in choosing their courses. The Essay program is designed to expose students to a wide variety of economic subjects and disciplines. Fourth-year students must write a mini-thesis in ECON 400 (approximately 25-35 pages) on an economic topic of their choice. The Essay route is excellent preparation for law school or an MBA program.

It is the student's responsibility to find a supervisor and topic.
