The next intake is for Summer 2024. The program will run from Summer 2024 to Spring 2025. Courses have both synchronous and asynchronous components, including online (Zoom) class sessions. Any synchronous sessions are in Mountain Time (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Dates and times are determined by the course instructor.

Summer Term

EDU 595 Foundations and Governance in Higher Education ★3

This course explores the structures, organizations and administration of Canadian institutions of higher education. Focus will be on the macro-level of policy decision making functions and differences between governance and institutional management. It will also include the jurisdictional issues in Canada, provincial constitutional arrangements, as well as the kinds of postsecondary systems (universities, colleges, polytechnics, apprenticeships, private vocational colleges).


Fall Term

EDU 595 Leadership Theories in Higher Education ★3

This course introduces leadership theory and research that are foundational for the underpinning beliefs and assumptions that provide direction for effective leadership in higher education contexts. Underpinned by the research on leadership, the focus will be on a comprehensive and critical overview of dominant approaches to leading in higher education (including leadership styles, strategies and communication practices).


Winter Term

EDU 595 Introduction to Legal and Ethical Issues for Academic Leaders ★3

This course introduces legal and ethical issues for leaders in institutions of higher education at all levels. This course will explore the ethical and legal parameters in institutions of higher education through legal cases, in addition to issues arising from, but not limited to, academic freedom, student codes of conduct, intellectual property policies, confidentiality, racial and sexual harassment, favouritism, exploitation, and conflict of interest.


Spring Term

EDU 595 Contemporary Topics in Higher Education ★3

This seminar-format course examines current issues, policies and challenges affecting Canadian institutions of higher education. Of particular interest in this course will be an exploration of contemporary social, cultural, political, and philosophical events that maintain traditions in the postsecondary sector, as well as changes. Self-reflection and critical analysis of contemporary leaders and events is an important element in this course. Using the material covered in the prior courses, students will examine various leadership theories and analyze current challenges in institutions of higher education and discuss the leadership skills needed from leaders. Throughout the course, students will reflect on how values and philosophical perspectives influence day-to-day leadership decisions and practices as well as how leaders respond to crises.
