Global Medical Summer Program

The Global Health Science Program is a rich 4 - week academic medical program for Clinical and Medical Science students, dental students, students in health sciences related programs, young physicians, teachers, researchers, and experts in health related fields. The course is offered by the Office of International Programs, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. The next offering of this program will be held online Monday to Friday from July 18 - August 12, 2022, 8:30 - 11:30 Beijing Time (Sunday to Thursday from July 17 - August 11, 2022, 18:30 - 21:30 MST Canada & USA). This 20 half-day academic program over 4 weeks will be held daily Monday to Friday over Zoom.  It is an interactive medical course offered in a unique format.  It offers meaningful exposure to the Canadian healthcare system including hospitals, family medicine, clinical medical practices and the health sciences program offered at the University of Alberta.  This program aims to meet the needs of those interested in exploring both clinical and research paths.  Participants will meet health faculty and trainees from various cultural and international backgrounds but who have similar career goals.

Total cost of the course is $1,800.00 CAN (tax included) + exchange rate if applicable. Full payment is due by June 30, 2022 to secure your spot in the program.

 

Program Objectives

The Global Health Science Program provides:
  • An interactive medical course in a unique format
  • Meaningful exposure to the Canadian health-care system, including hospital, family medicine and clinical medical practices
  • An opportunity to meet with renown medical researchers such as U of A's Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Michael Houghton
  • An opportunity for participants to learn about Canadian society and culture
  • An opportunity for participants to meet new friends with different cultural backgrounds

Program Candidates

  • Clinical medicine & Medical Science students 
  • Students may be in any year of their medical or health sciences program
  • Students from Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry international partners
  • Young physicians, teachers, researchers, experts in health related fields

Online Program

Curriculum

  • Presentations about current topics in North American medical education
  • Small group discussions
  • Virtual lab tours
  • Participation in mini Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)
  • Opportunities for virtual clinical observership

Fees

Online program fee of CAD $1,715 + applicable taxes per trainee includes:

  • Tuition and access to course materials in eClass
  • Funding sources include participant's sponsoring institution (fully or partially funded) and self - sponsored
  • Cancellation policy:  90% refund before April 30, 50% refund before June 30, no refund after June 30.

In-Person Program (Currently Suspended due to Covid-19)

  • Small group discussions and hands-on simulation practice
  • Lab tours
  • Participation in mini Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)

Fees

In person program fee of CAD $6,000 per trainee includes:

  • Tuition and course materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Shared accommodation for four (4) weeks
  • Group airport transfer
  • Local social activities
  • Orientation and farewell events

Optional Social Activities (Rocky Mountain Trip) available for additional fees.
