Important: Following successful completion of the theory exam, a registration link will be provided - the clinical course must be completed within 8-months of the theory exam.

Program Overview

Our anesthetics certification combines self-study, and interactive, hands-on training to:

  • Review head and neck anatomy.
  • Demonstrate the techniques.
  • Explain patient evaluations, complications, and office emergencies.

Following successful completion of both the theory and clinical courses apply to the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists for authorization.


Theory Course

ONLINE | TUITION $400 | UNLIMITED CAPACITY

The local anesthetics theory course is a guided, self-study course administered through eClass.

Participants must complete the theory component and the written theory examination at least three weeks before registering for the clinical course. The theory exam is offered monthly at the University of Alberta, and the date is chosen during registration. Exams can also be written at a recognized testing center (testing center fees apply).

Note: Exams are held on the first Monday of each month. CDE also accepts other universities, colleges, libraries or schools as acceptable testing centers.

Clinical Course

HANDS-ON | TUITION $2,000 | LIMITED CAPACITY

After successful completion of the theory exam, participants will be able to register and attend the in-person clinical course. In the clinical, participants will practice local anesthetic injection techniques through simulation and clinical learning experiences.

On completion of the theory and clinical courses participants will receive a certification to administer local anesthesia.

  • Participants must be certified RDH and hold a current Registration Practice Permit.
  • Candidates must also hold a current Healthcare provider CPR certificate (validity is 12 months from the date of issue).
  • RDHs are required to practice in a Dental office as a RDH for a minimum of 6 months before taking the clinical module.

Course Overview

Course Overview

This course is a review of the Local Anaesthesia for Dental Hygienists course offered by Continuing Dental Education (CDE) at the University of Alberta.

Participants must be on the General Register with the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists (ACDH) with Advanced Practice Authorization for delivery of Local Anaesthesia. Participants must have completed a council approved Local Anaesthesia for Registered Dental Hygienists course and provide evidence of current CPR.

Classroom review will briefly touch on pharmacology, medical emergencies, and injection techniques. There will be a short quiz at the end of the lecture session. Clinical sessions will incorporate demonstration and observation of the following injections: IO, PSA, GP, NP, MI, IA/L, LB. Additional focus will be on patient and operator positioning, retraction, landmarking, troubleshooting and building confidence. Participants will be observed, evaluated and must demonstrate entry level competence upon course completion.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have reviewed theoretical and clinical components in providing safe and effective local anesthesia. Through instructor observation, feedback and evaluation, participants will be able to fine tune their local anesthesia skills and increase their safety, efficacy and confidence in delivery.
