Impact

By offering IV conscious sedation, dental offices are better able to serve their nervous patients and local community. Offering this service empowers you to better retain and treat patients when confronted with difficult cases, anxious patients, or those that require stronger sedation options. Furthermore, you’ll be able to provide more immediate care by eliminating the need for specialists in some cases. IV sedation makes you stand out by combining improved customer service and patient care options.

To ensure our students have the clinical skills necessary for success we:

  • Requiring a minimum of 21 IV starts
  • Provide ongoing support including access to instructors and setup guidance after course completion
  • Focus on the clinical team with opportunities to train your Dental Assistants in sedation

Benefits of Taking IV Sedation at the UofA

  • We provide supplies, instrumentation (excluding Precordial Stethoscopes), and prescreened sedation patients
  • Offer the option to pay in installments
  • We will deduct the cost of Nitrous Oxide and Oral Sedation if it’s been completed within the past 12 months

Nitrous training and ECG Interpretation (along with the intro to Session 2 materials with James Habstritt) takes a total of two days.

If you already have Nitrous training through the UofA you are eligible to receive a refund for this portion of the course and you only need to attend the ECG Interpretation module with James Habstritt at Professional Medical Associates.

Session 2 has a maximum of 9 participants to ensure a high instructor to student ratio.

During this session, participants will undergo ACLS training, training of IV starts, IM injections, and they compile their emergency kits with James Habstritt at Professional Medical Associates. This portion of the program takes four days total.

Session 2 also consists of a Two-Drug Lecture with Dr. James Lipon where the use of sedation medications and their interactions are discussed. A Q&A period is also included to answer any questions they may have for Session 3.

Lectures are delivered in-person or via Zoom.

The final session of this program is an in-person clinical component where participants sedate 21 patients.

The remaining five days consist of sedating and completing congruent dentistry with 21 IV sedation patients - In total, it takes six days to complete Session 3.

It is a requirement for Session 3 that all participants have 2 Registered Dental Assistants to help them with cases. RDAs can be supplied by the U of A if needed for an added fee of $1500 per assistant. If participants bring their RDAs with them, they will receive their Sedation Assistant Certification (SAC) once the course is complete.
