Oral sedation can help reduce patient apprehension and anxiety - helping improve their overall experience. Our mission is to empower you to utilize oral sedation with confidence in your office.

Course Overview

Summary


This course covers modality 3 in Alberta - oral sedation for patients 12 years of age and older and consists of an online theory and lecture (pre-study required) module in eClass followed by a scheduled clinic day. 

Upon completion, you will have a firm grasp on the safe administration of oral sedatives and proper charting that is required.

Impact


By offering Oral Sedation, dental offices are better able to serve their nervous patients and local community. Offering this service empowers you to better retain and treat patients when confronted with difficult cases or anxious patients.

Syllabus


Pre-Study

Some pre-reading/pre-study will be assigned prior to your attendance at the course.

To meet the potential need from the dentists in the appropriate setting, course sizes are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Didactic & Clinical Session Format

  • Patient selection and history
  • Patient evaluation and monitoring
  • Medical emergency management
  • Discharge considerations
  • Nitrous Sedation Monitoring (Course participants will serve as each other’s patients)
  • Oral Sedation lecture
  • Program Participant Assessment: Will include Clinical Performance Competencies & a Multiple Choice Written Exam

Required Materials

Participants will be required to purchase the textbook: Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management" 6th Edition, by Dr. Stanley F. Malamed. ISBN:0323400531.

The textbook can be purchased from the University of Alberta Bookstore at 780-492-4215 for approximately $100 or through Amazon or Chapters.

Prerequisites


  • Active practicing license from your dental regulatory authority in Canada.
  • Participants must have a current CPR certificate (BLS – issued within the last 12 months that will remain valid through the clinical sessions).

A portrait of Dr. Saranjeev Lalh

Dr. Lalh was appointed the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the internationally recognized Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) at the Misericordia Hospital and Covenant Health, dealing with the reconstruction of patients with head and neck cancer.

His area of focus is the use of technological advances in digital imaging for reconstructive surgical procedures and aesthetic medicine.

Cancellation/ Transfer Policy

Due to the significant demand, scope and requirements of this program, tuition refunds will not be facilitated with the exception of extreme circumstances. Transfer to a future session may be facilitated under certain extenuating circumstances, and with sufficient notice provided, particularly for clinical session transfers (2.5 months notice at minimum for clinical sessions, provided a spot is available in the following clinical session – transfer fee may apply).
