Student Work Placement Program - SWPP

Formerly known as SWILP (Student Work Integrated Learning Program)

The Government of Canada released a new subsidy program to support industry employers (small - to medium size companies) to hire post-secondary students within the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The program provides for partial reimbursement of salaries paid to these students.

Currently SWPP is being distributed by the following associations (more organizations will be added in the future)

General requirements:

  • Internship duration should be 16 weeks long with 5 days a week and 7.5 hours/day.
  • Students must be enrolled as a full-time student at a post-secondary institution
  • Students must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Provincial and territorial governments are NOT eligible for SWPP funding
  • Positions must be net new to qualify for the funding

Employers can only hold one federal subsidy at a time; this means the student's salary cannot be topped up with another federal source (NSERC, IRAP etc.). However provincial and industrial funding for example is acceptable.
