International Student Orientation

International students enrich our campus community, and we can’t wait to meet you!

In addition to learning your way around campus and registering in classes, as a new international student, you need to register for health insurance, arrange for your social insurance number, an ID card or driver’s licence and learn practical tips to thrive at university. Participating in the U of A’s International Student Orientation activities ensures that you have what you need to start your new life in Canada.

The U of A has a variety of information sessions and orientation activities to help you prepare for life at the U of A.

Before you arrive, attend special online sessions to answer many of your questions and help you plan your move.

Pre-Departure Information Sessions | Various dates in May, June and July | Online

Register for one of our online sessions to better understand what you need to prepare as you plan for your new life in Alberta. Learn more and register

Parent Info Session | July 3 and August 10 - Online | August 29 in-person

The Parent Info Sessions are an opportunity for parents and guardians to learn about the various services available to help support you throughout your time at the U of A. Learn more and register


After you arrive, participate in International Student Orientation activities to help prepare you for your new life in Canada.

Register for the following programs when you register for the U of A Orientation.

Campus Check-In | August 15, 18, 22, 25, 29 - September 1, 5, 8 | Telus Centre (no registration required)

After you arrive on campus, make sure you visit Campus Check-In at the International Service Centre, where you can:

  • Apply for health care
  • Get your social insurance number so that you can work while you study
  • Discover banking options and phone plans
  • Learn how to navigate campus and the city
  • Explore Edmonton and more

Social Insurance Number (SIN) Clinic | August 27 - 30 | 9 am - 4 pm | Telus Centre

The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a government-issued number that is legally required for all workers in Canada and for people to access government services. Service Canada will be on-site at the Telus Centre, North Campus, so you can register for your SIN card. Bring your immigration documents and get it done right on campus.

International Student Orientation: Canada A to Zed | August 29 

Attend the international student in-person orientation session to connect with staff and other international students. Join the International Student and Visitor Services team for some light refreshments and interactive fun.

InfoMart | August 29 | 12 pm - 4 pm | Telus Centre

Meet your international student advisors, and connect with campus services and Edmonton businesses to discover U of A resources, supports, services, student groups, libraries, Chaplains and more.

International BBQ | August 29 | 12 pm - 4 pm | Telus Centre

During InfoMart, outside Telus Centre, enjoy a taste of the world at the International BBQ served by various student groups from diverse cultures.
