Committees

MD Program governance is supported by a robust committee structure that includes the MD Curriculum and Program Committee (MDCPC), the Pre-Clerkship and Clerkship Coordinators Sub-Committees and the Assessment Committee — a team of senior academic and administrative leaders who are responsible for the management of the MD Program.

MD Curriculum + Program Committee (MDCPC)

The MDCPC is responsible for the overall operations and administration of the MD Program.

The MDCPC is responsible for:

  • Central oversight of the MD Program's curriculum
  • Program and teaching evaluations
  • Student assessment, as informed by the MD Program Assessment Committee
  • Student professionalism, as informed by the Professionalism Committee
  • Medical student services, including the MD Program office alongside various faculty units
  • Faculty member contribution to the MD Program, in partnership with department chairs
  • Continuous quality improvement of the MD Program

The MDCPC is chaired by the associate dean of the MD Program and works with various committees, groups and stakeholders to ensure the planning, implementation, support and services of the MD Program are functioning as intended.

Sub-Committees + Working Groups

Several sub-committees which report to MDCPC are responsible for curricular management and assessment. These sub-committees, along with the MDCPC, oversee the curriculum as a whole and have responsibility for the overall design, management, integration and enhancement of a coherent and coordinated medical curriculum.

Pre-Clerkship Coordinators Sub-Committee

The purpose of the Pre-Clerkship Coordinators Sub-Committee is to implement the pre-clerkship curriculum. The committee integrates the various medical and basic science disciplines to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential to effective, efficient and socially accountable patient care. Additionally, the committee prepares students for the clerkship phase of their medical education.

Clerkship Coordinators Sub-Committee

The Clerkship Coordinators Committee enables the coordinated and collaborative implementation of the clerkship curriculum. Clerkship coordinators work to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to effective, efficient and socially accountable patient care. Additionally, the committee prepares students for a successful transition into residency.

Assessment Sub-Committee

The Assessment Sub-Committee is responsible for monitoring and reviewing appropriate assessment processes across the MD curriculum to provide consistent, reliable evaluation of student performance and support program development.

Longitudinal Themes Sub-Committee

The Longitudinal Themes Sub-Committee enables the coordinated and collaborative implementation of the Longitudinal Themes curriculum. Through integrated representation of the various medical disciplines, this committee provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential to effective, efficient and socially accountable patient care.

Health Promoting Learning & Work Environment (HPLWE) Sub-Committee

The HPLWE Sub-Committee ensures that medical students have access to healthy learning environments and supports the adoption of the Okanagan Charter strategic directions. This sub-committee will review problems with the learning environment and collaborate with FoMD and our clinical affiliates to address these situations.

Quality Improvement Sub-Committee

The Quality Improvement Sub-Committee supports the integration of a continuous quality improvement model within the MD Program and assists the MD Program and the FoMD in meeting or exceeding all current and future accreditation requirements. As part of a continuous quality improvement plan, the committee reviews data and recommends actions to ensure ongoing compliance with accreditation standards.

Social Accountability Council

The Social Accountability Council is an advisory group within the MD Program that listens and brings forward the voices and perspectives of communities experiencing health inequities. Additionally, the council serves as a resource for students to engage with prioritized communities for the mutual benefit of the community and student learning.

Undergraduate Medical Education Professionalism Committee

The Undergraduate Medical Education Professionalism Committee reviews all lapses and other evaluations submitted about students, recommends appropriate courses of action and develops and revises MD Program professionalism policies.

Working Groups

Curriculum Review Working Groups

The curriculum review working groups are created to review the implementation, assessment, and evaluation of curricular objectives. The process is a critical part of the curriculum review, ensuring students are prepared for a successful transition into residency.

Curriculum working groups review each course and clerkship every two years. Groups are composed of:

  • Relevant course and clerkship coordinators 
  • A family physician
  • Specialists 
  • Basic and clinical sciences 
  • Learners 

The process is led by the assistant dean, Curriculum and the Curriculum Management Unit.

Academic Standings Committee (ASC)

The ASC is responsible for sending recommendations regarding academic standings and promotions to the Faculty Academic Standings + Promotions Committee (FASPC). This includes responsibility for the process of student evaluations, assignment of grades and academic standings in all of the courses of the MD Program.

ASC determines the academic standing of each student at the end of each academic year, set out in the U of A calendar. The ASC determines lists of students in various academic standing categories and makes recommendations on which student should be reviewed by the FASPC according to the program ASC terms of reference and the terms of reference for the FASPC.
