The Transition Year Program (TYP) is a University access program for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students who may not be prepared to enter a faculty through the regular admissions route. This is not an upgrading program, but a full-time University of Alberta program in Open Studies.
About the Transition Year Program
The Transition Year Program (TYP) is for Indigenous students who may not be prepared to enter a faculty through the regular admissions route. TYP is not an upgrading program — it's a full-time, on-campus program that sets you up to enter a degree program in your second year.
The program has both academic and cultural components and will provide you with a strong network of support by getting to know other students in a small, intimate learning environment.

Helping You Find Your Purpose
The Transition Year Program has been in existence for several decades at the U of A, and has been the starting point for a large and diverse group of students who have been successful in a wide range of programs. TYP has both academic and cultural components and provides opportunities for community involvement, access to Elders, cultural teachers in the classroom, and more. Students create a strong network of support by getting to know other students in a small, intimate learning environment.
Watch as the TYP team and students describe the Transition Year Program and its supports for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.

“The Transition Year Program answered all of my questions and more. TYP showed me how to become resourceful and independent as a university student. This helped me feel confident when I transitioned into the Nursing program. The friendships, support, and connections I made in my TYP year carried me through my nursing degree and will stay with me long after I graduate.”

“Growing up I never would have guessed that I would be going to university. The Transition Year Program (TYP) and the services that they provided me in my first year ensured that I was supported and guided through all of the challenges a university student faces. Overall, TYP has given me a sense of belonging, culture, identity, and encouragement to continue my journey of post-secondary studies.”
