Tom Dust

Secondary Education


Dr. Thomas Dust holds the position of Professor of Secondary Music Education. Dr. Dust teaches the undergraduate and graduate Curriculum and Instruction courses in secondary music, directs the Faculty of Education Concert Band and Jazz Band II for the Department of Music.

Dr. Dust holds undergraduate degrees in Science and Music Education from the University of Alberta and has earned the degrees of Master of Music (Jazz Studies) and Doctor of Music Education from Indiana University School of Music (Bloomington). While attending Indiana University he held the position of Associate Instructor in the Jazz Department and was the director of the Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis Campus Jazz Ensemble. His principal teachers were David Baker, Dominic Spera, Allan Dean, Charles Schmidt and Jean Sinor.

Dr. Dust is active as a school band clinician, festival adjudicator and professional trumpeter and bandleader. He has written numerous jazz compositions for performance by Jazz Band II and is a frequent contributor of articles to various local, national and international music and music education journals. He is an active member of the MENC, the IAJE, the International Trumpet Guild and the American Federation of Musicians (local 390). Dr. Dust's performance credits include work with the Tommy Banks Big Band, the Big Miller Big Band, the Al Cobine Big Band, the Tommy Dorsey Show, the Tony Baron Orchestra, the El Morocco Orchestra, Ice Capades and numerous show bands, celebrity back-up orchestras, circus bands and rodeo bands.
