Dr. Bruce Ritchie

‘76 BMedSci, ‘78 MD
Member at Large

Bruce was born and raised in Edmonton, finishing medical school in 1978 before more training in Christchurch, New Zealand (where he met his wife, Margie), then to Calgary and Vancouver. They returned to Edmonton in 1991 with three children, planning to stay 5-10 years before moving on to other adventures, but opportunities in Alberta kept him working full-time in Medicine and Research in Edmonton, and enjoying the adventures of nine grandchildren.

Bruce has been lucky to serve as a volunteer on the medical and scientific advisory boards of many patient organizations, including the CHS - Canadian Hemophilia Society, Immunity Canada - the Canadian Immunodeficiency Patient Organization; HAE Canada, the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alberta, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada, CanHaem - the Canadian Hemoglobinopathy Association of Canada, CAP - the Canadian Association for Porphyria, and was one of the founding members of the Network of Rare Blood Disorder Organizations, which provided guidance and support to other small patient organizations. His work has been recognized with a number of awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the CHS, two Queen Elizabeth Medals, a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the 2023 UAlberta Distinguished Alumni Award.
