Let's Talk Health

From Stress to Burnout

Dr. Quentin Durand-Moreau, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Alberta

Job Stress and Burnout

When we talk about mental health at work, the conversation often turns to what you can do: breathe, meditate, stretch, build resilience, manage your stress, or take part in a wellness program.

But what if all of this was part of the problem rather than the solution? What if the focus on these individual-level strategies had limited evidence of any meaningful and long term effect on your job stress?

In this thought-provoking session, Dr. Quentin Durand-Moreau will use (fictional) workplace cases to explore what job stress really is, how working conditions can affect both mental and physical health, and what we mean by psychosocial risks. We will look beyond individual coping strategies to consider what can be changed at the level of work organization, management, and policies.

We will also discuss an often-overlooked tool for improving working conditions: regulation and enforcement.

And, along the way, you will have the opportunity to discover the obscure field of medicine that deals with all of this: Occupational Medicine!
