Professor Renke Appointment to U of A Board of Governors

The Faculty of Law would like to congratulate Professor Wayne Renke on the announcement of his appointment to the University of Alberta Board of Governors, effective September 3, 2012. Professor Renke will serve as the representative of the Association of Academic Staff.

Professor Renke holds a B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Alberta, an LL. B., also from the University of Alberta (1985), and an LL. M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was in private practice for several years before joining the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1993. His teaching areas include Criminal Law, Evidence, and - more recently - Energy Law. He was the Faculty's 2001 Tevie Miller Teaching Excellence Award recipient. Professor Renke's publications and research have concerned criminal procedure, sexual assault, public health and criminal law, judicial independence, privacy, and counter-terrorism.

Professor Renke has served as President of the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (1999), Special Advisor to the Provost of the University (2000 - 2003), and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies and Research) of the Faculty of Law (2004 - 2005). From 2005 to 2010 he served as the Associate Dean (Academic) and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law. In 2010 - 2011 he was seconded to University of Alberta International, as University Advisor - International Educational Experiences. He returned to full-time teaching at the Faculty of Law in 2011. Professor Renke has served on numerous University and Faculty committees, including the Arts, Science, Law Research Ethics Board (Chair, 2007 - 2008) and the Governance Expert Panel of the University's Funding Solutions Task Force (Chair, 2002 - 2003).

Professor Renke has been a member of the Board of the Alberta Law Reform Institute and counsel to the Criminal Rules Working Group of the Institute's Rules of Court project. He was a member of the Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. In 2007, he was a member of the Province's Crime Reduction and Safe Communities Task Force. He is currently a member of the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission.
