The University of Alberta Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Bruce Ziff is the winner of the 2013 Honourable Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award, and Ms. Naomi Schmold, is the winner of the 2013 Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award.
With the support of the Alumni and Friends of the Faculty of Law Association, the Faculty established the Tevie Miller Award in 1998 to honour the memory of the late Mr. Justice Tevie Miller, who served as Chancellor of the University of Alberta from 1986-1990, and to recognize excellence in teaching by a full time member of the Faculty. The Faculty established the Sessional Teaching Excellence Award in 2005 to recognize excellence in teaching by a sessional lecturer in the Faculty of Law. In 2013 the Faculty named the award in honour of two of its longest serving sessional lecturers, Alex Pringle, Q.C. and Peter Royal, Q.C., both of whom were previous winners of the award.
During the 2012-13 academic year, for which he is being recognized, Professor Ziff taught courses in Property, Land Titles and Interviewing and Counselling. Ms. Schmold is being recognized for her work teaching Legal Research and Writing to first year students.
The Faculty of Law would also like to acknowledge the teaching contributions of the other nominees for the awards: Professors Barbara Billingsley, Wayne Renke, and Roderick Wood for the Tevie Miller Award and Shawn Beaver and Lynn Penrod for the Pringle/Royal Award.
"Bruce and Naomi are very deserving winners," Dean Philip Bryden stated. "But without detracting from their accomplishments I would like to say that it is a pleasure, albeit a challenge, to have so many dedicated and accomplished law teachers from whom to choose."
The Faculty of Law will be holding a ceremony in CN Alumni Hall on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at which the awards will be presented to Professor Ziff and Ms. Schmold. More details will be provided closer to the event.
