Faculty of Law Communications - 3 October 2014

The UAlberta Faculty of Law would like to wish the very best to our Law students who are taking part in the Brimacombe Moot, which is being held today and Saturday, October 4, 2014, (if necessary).

The event takes place between 9:00am and 11:50am and 1:00pm - 4:40pm, in the Eldon Foote Moot Court room, on the second floor of the UAlberta Faculty of Law (see attached schedule for details). Come and show your support for the Brimacombe Moot competitors today and tomorrow!

We have forty competitors, plus nine first year law students who have volunteered as clerks. UAlberta Faculty of Law's Professor Matthew Lewans and Professor Peter Sankoff are the judges for the Brimacombe Moot.

This competition memorializes Jim Brimacombe, a highly respected Edmonton criminal lawyer. The competition is open to 2L and 3L students applying to join a competitive moot team.

The Brimacombe Competition is the means for selecting teams for the following moots:

  • Alberta Court of Appeal Moots (three teams)
  • Bennett Jones Health Law
  • Canadian Corporate/Securities
  • Clinton J. Ford
  • Donald G.H. Bowman Tax Moot
  • Gale Cup
  • Laskin
  • Wilson

In addition, the winner of the Brimacombe is immortalized on the University of Alberta Brimacombe trophy.

The competition is supervised by the Brimacombe co-ordinators and judges, who set the question and act as final authority respecting all questions relating to the conduct of the competition.

Past winners of the Brimacombe Moot have gone on to win prestigious national moots. In 2013 the UAlberta Faculty of Law became the first Western Canadian law school, in the history of the competition, to win the Laskin Memorial Moot: http://lawschool.ualberta.ca/news/main-news/2013/march/2013laskinmootvictory
