U of A Law celebrated "Law in Pink" as part of Pink T-Shirt Day

Katherine Thompson - 26 February 2014

On February 26, 2014, U of A Faculty of Law students, faculty, and staff celebrated "Law in Pink" day. There were pink anti-bullying t-shirts given away, OUTlaw and Women's Law Forum (WLF) organized games, information booth, pink cupcakes and lemonade enjoyed, pink goodies for sale, and all the proceeds raised are going to Camp FyreFly. Camp Fyrefly is a leadership retreat for sexual and gender minority youth.

At lunch time the law students, faculty, staff walked over to the Telus Centre, to join people from all over the University of Alberta who had congregated, each wearing their pink t-shirts, in support of anti-bullying.

Bullying is unacceptable. Over the last few years, we see more and more that the issue is being brought to the forefront. Please, get involved and get your pink on!

Law in Pink is part of Bullying Prevention Month at the University of Alberta (February 3-February 26, 2014). This initiative is an opportunity for students, staff and faculty members to learn more about both the impacts and resources for dealing with bullying on campus.

On February 26, 2014 the U of A campus community celebrated Pink T-Shirt Day as the culmination of these efforts to raise awareness about bullying and harassment on campus. Pink T-Shirt Day is an event that is marked across Canada - more information can be found here.

It is interesting to note that the University of Alberta is different to most other Canadian post-secondary institutions. We have a definition of bullying in our human rights policy, which is called the Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy.

This initiative is a partnership with a number of organizations on campus including the University of Alberta Bookstore, UWell, Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services, Office of Safe Disclosure & Human Rights, Human Resource Services, Community Social Work Team and Residence Services.
