Orientation Day at the Faculty of Law (Sept 2, 2014)

The air in the University of Alberta Faculty of Law was thick with nervous excitement on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, as it saw the arrival of incoming first year law students on their first day of orientation.

The Class of 2017 law students were greeted in the law school lobby by the smiling faces of Faculty of Law Student Services staff alongside 2L and 3L students, who welcomed the students to their new place of study for the next three years.

After registration, the incoming first year law students were directed upstairs where they were met by law alumni and current law students who handed them information and answered many questions.

Once inside the large lecture theatre the first year law students were warmly welcomed to the UAlberta Faculty of Law by Vice Dean Wayne Renke; Dean Paul D. Paton; Scott Meyer, President of the Law Students' Association (LSA); and Wilma Bernhardt, Elder, who gave a blessing . Dean Paton spoke of the challenging yet exciting and fulfilling years of study that lay ahead of them at the law school, and introduced the students to faculty and staff.

A number of eminent representatives of the legal community also addressed the first year students, including The Honourable Mr. Justice Russell S. Brown, Courts of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut; and Kevin Feth, Q.C., President of the Law Society of Alberta.

The formal part of the day for the first year law students concluded with 2L and 3L students leading a number of small group tours around the law school, after which they were all free to relax and mingle in the casual environment of the Dean's BBQ, situated in front of the law school building. The first year law students were treated to a wonderful musical performance by UAlberta Law alumnus Simon Elzen-Hoskyn (Class of 2014) whilst enjoying BBQ and chatting with Dean Paton and various faculty members.
