- - 2 September 2014

Statement from Paul D. Paton, dean, University of Alberta Faculty of Law

"It is with great sadness that I, along with the entire University of Alberta Faculty of Law family, learned of the passing of Gail Vickery, former Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta and colleague and friend to so many.

"Chief Judge Vickery was a truly remarkable person, whose passion for justice left a lasting mark on Alberta's legal community right from her early days as a counsel at the firm Macleod Dixon in Calgary to her 2006 appointment as Alberta's first female chief judge. Equally impressive was her advocacy for children and families as director and legal adviser for Aunts at Large and as president of Calgary Family Services.

"Innumerable U of A students and alumni had the privilege of working with Chief Judge Vickery through her four decades practising law here in Canada and abroad and, later, her time served as a judge, assistant chief judge and chief judge. Her leadership and commitment to increasing public confidence in the legal system and access to justice helped lead to the creation of Court Case Management. Her legacy as a pioneer and a mentor at Macleod Dixon and as a judge will continue to inspire future generations of women in the legal profession.

"The University of Alberta Faculty of Law sends our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and everyone who benefited from Chief Judge Vickery's wisdom and grace."
