The Business Lawyer's Interest in International Law

Professor Joanna Harrington speaks to the CBA International Business Law Section in Calgary

Law Faculty Communications on January 27, 2015 - 27 January 2015

Professor Joanna Harrington of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law recently teamed up with Sean Fraser, an Associate with Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP in Calgary, to deliver a lunchtime talk on "From Scotland to South Sudan: Legal Implications of Creating New States" at the invitation of the International Business Law Section - South of the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch). With the creation of a number of new countries in the world, and the potential for more, the question arises as to what are the legal implications for the continuing state, for the new state, and for Canadian investors doing business abroad. Participants in the lunchtime session also discussed the legal impact of changes in government, including withdrawals from bilateral investment treaties, as well as the legal issues associated with secession.
